Not intentionally, but Ive done it 4-5 times at least. I had long drives, where I needed only to sleep 4 or 5 hours, and it made no sense to pay $100+ for a few hours sleep. Especially when you have a lot on hour mind, and after the hassle of checking in and getting situated, you find that you dint even sleep that much. I sleep in the parking lots of the places I would stay if I had cash to burn, i.e. Holiday inn express, etc. Its funny to read this article, because for me, I first started doing this when I had to travel from denver to detroit for my grandfathers funeral. I had very little money, and needed to get there asap. Next thing you know I did it again on the reverse trip. Lol. Then again for a different trip. Then again. Now I want to visit Charleston, apparently an expensive town. The difference is, before Id only sleep 3-5 hrs in the car, then continue to my destination. This would be WAY more time sleeping and/or resting in my vehicle. I dont know....KJ https://www.blogger.com/profile/12212987357300290212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6944549659371369109.post-3121815674915301192014-12-11T07:10:45.951-08:002014-12-11T07:10:45.951-08:00https://www.facebook.com/ben.groseclose/posts/1020...https://www.facebook.com/ben.groseclose/posts/10202485716209874Ben Jamminhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06749974723411967859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6944549659371369109.post-35491715699222001492014-12-11T07:09:13.948-08:002014-12-11T07:09:13.948-08:00I had written a long post to complement your story...I had written a long post to complement your story and managed to lose it...
Here's the short version...

I met Eric Harroun at Dodey's bar in north Phoenix, Arizona on November 20th, 2013
After 70-90 minutes and a few beers, he had told me his story about his travels in Egypt and Libya (I'm hazy about Libya) and his subsequent activities in Syria with the rebels fighting Assad... I've traveled coast to coast, and...Great post! I've traveled coast to coast, and north to south in the US for the last 42 years and have chosen hotels for sleeping fewer than 5 times. My first trips were from San Diego to Southern Oregon in a little VW bug with my infant daughter. She slept in her car bed and I snuggled down behind the wheel. The family grew to 5 children--and a cargo van (former ambulance) that we converted to accommodate us and our journeying took us across the southern states. We even did it in January in a Datsun B210! ALMOST FROZE in New Mexico--the car was not heater equipped well enough for that coldness. Blankets and coats got us through, but our breath was frozen on the inside of the windows.

We always stop in rest areas (as my dad did when I was a child), or anywhere there are people coming and going all night--gas stations, fast food, Wal-Mart, hotels... Truck stops are GREAT and a favorite when the weather is bad. Truckers tend to share highway/road conditions and other tips.

The only time I have ever been approached by law enforcement were two times I COULD have been in a lot or in a rest stop, had I not been too tired to continue driving another second. The first time, I was pregnant, traveling with 3 young children in a '65 Mustang. I'd been up all day and all night and having had my life totally turned upside down, I started driving to visit my family 28 hours away. I made it about to Carlsbad--and couldn't keep going. Pulled to the side of the
I-5 and went to sleep. I was awakened by CHP tapping the window and asking, "Ma'am, are you ok?" 'Yes, just tired'--explained the situation. He pointed to the sign about 100 yards in front of me--"You were almost at the rest area, Ma'am, go there so you're safely off the highway." I was so tired, I hadn't even seen the sign.

Same thing happened in Monroe, LA. I did get off the I-20 and into a huge mall area, but I didn't feel overly comfortable. Still, I was too tired to keep going. I pulled off the road, (I THOUGHT) and went to sleep. I got another "Are you ok, Ma'am" question from the Monroe PD, who informed me that it was ok to sleep there, but I probably wanted to get parked, or park IN the lot! (I was still rather "in" the street. Thankfully it was the middle of the night and no one was out driving through the mall area.

These days, I've done it for so long on so MANY highways in so many cities/towns that I can pretty much plan where I am going to stop and just go there and sleep--before I am so tired I can't go any farther.

Great tip on netting for windows! THAT is one thing I will add for the upcoming summer junket.

I NEVER leave my car running with windows up --- PERIOD! And I don't hide. I am OBVIOUSLY in my van--Toyota mini these days--OBVIOUSLY traveling--and OBVIOUSLY sleeping. If I am traveling in the winter and alone, I have my -35 degree sleeping bag, matches, a BIG candle and survival food, in case I get stranded. I was told by a traveler in CO that the heat from a candle (with a window open a 'crack' would keep you from freezing to death if you were stranded. That's what her family always did. Don't want to test that one, but I use it.

I still travel with kids (grands) and save BIG on hotel expenses--more $$ for fun stuff at the end of the journey.

Future plan? The hubs and I will do the RV thing and and hang out at Wal-Mart and rest areas along the blue lines--until then Toyota Sienna rolls the road.

Happy trails!Aletheahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07911783688215144602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6944549659371369109.post-75098158844700707982014-07-15T14:55:00.680-07:002014-07-15T14:55:00.680-07:00For anyone in the future that might consider this:...For anyone in the future that might consider this:

Car parks anywhere near London are rarely free and they seem to be more vigilant about abandoned cars. It might be possible to park along some suburban streets in the greater metro area, but I'd be worried about choosing the wrong location.

Due to expensive rental cars and petrol/diesel prices, I'd strongly recommend using their extensive railway system with a BritRail Pass, stay in hostels in cities, and B&Bs in smaller towns. Much safer, faster travel in the city of London, easier, and it allows you to see more of the scenery. Their cities and towns are very compact and can be quite difficult and/or expensive (tolls) to navigate in a car. If you do decide to drive and can't find a suitable spot to sleep in the car, I've noticed that M road "exit" hotels (that's what I call them - they're like private rest areas around a petrol station with an attached hotel) in remote areas tend to be very inexpensive, roughly on a par with or less than similar Motel 6 locations in the US (also, curiously-enough, if I had to sleep in a car somewhere in the UK, a car park at one of these is about the safest place I could think of).

I recommend only renting a car when you really need it since the BritRail Pass (must be purchased in advance) is incredibly reasonable for the amount you can use it.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12722461445462082055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6944549659371369109.post-43812503297831274482014-06-18T11:23:41.314-07:002014-06-18T11:23:41.314-07:00This is all ok for guys, but a single woman sleepi...This is all ok for guys, but a single woman sleeping in her car anywhere at night could pose a potential threat to her. I am moving from New York to Texas on a micro budget. I am stressing about where to stay cheap on my way there. I have thought about sleeping in my car in places like Walmart parking lots, rest stops, etc., but the thought of being scoped out by men with rape on their minds, seeing a female alone in a car at night is just too frightening for me. Can anyone tell me where I can stay for three nights cheap from New York to Big Spring, Texas? I don't want to learn to sleep in my car, I would rather pay a little money and be safe in a room somewhere, but I don't have a lot of money to spend. Moving on a budget of $1000.00 or less. When I applied I needed a street address and had to bring the card USPO mailed to that address to finalize the application and get the box. This was fine for decades until recently, the last 5 years or more, I have needed to prove i have a street address in order to renew my box. I would not advise anyone to use a USA PO Box for an address unless they have a street address. Also, my PO Box loads up with junk mail two times a week. You need some one to empty the box. The PO will not forward any mail unless you close the box and change your address.ccbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00311222404814604393noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6944549659371369109.post-2698150617376988952013-12-25T11:40:58.341-08:002013-12-25T11:40:58.341-08:00I've been 'free sleeping' for a while ...I've been 'free sleeping' for a while now, even with the possibility of giving up my apartment because Im never home to use it. ive recently explored key west and oahu. will a little income and a cellphone(android), as long as one can shower, i dont see the need for possessions like apartments.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6944549659371369109.post-41940024996613742052013-12-24T08:48:44.820-08:002013-12-24T08:48:44.820-08:00I don't know. (http://goo.gl/maps/mw3lr) It has a locked metal gate, but you can easily go around the southern end of the white concrete wall, walk through about 25 feet of woods and you will be beyond the gate. Looks like construction work was stopped on the mansion about 5 to 8 years ago, there is a catamaran sitting inside the mansion with a license sticker from 2003. There is evidence of previous campers as I saw a fire ring and someone had placed a ladder against a palm tree presumably to get coconuts. Although I didn't, it might be possible to camp here, but if you had a vehicle, there is no good place to park except on the side of the road and any cop passing by would certainly know exactly what you were up to and come to investigate, I'm sure. There are dozens of large iguanas on the island, which appears to be man-made, and lots of sandspurs so be aware of that. The partially built concrete mansion is very solid and all holes in the slabs still have railings around them, the roof appears to be solid, so you could probably spend the night there with no problems. There are some tables and chairs but they have been chained to columns so they aren't really usable. If you do decide to camp there please keep a low profile and don't litter.
Another site we found is the former Caribbean Village Motel which was wiped out by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, and has been sitting vacant since. Map: http://goo.gl/maps/GL5ab
Coordinates: 24.600269, -81.650419
10 miles north of Key West on Big Coppett Key, near mile marker 10.7
Although this place is abandoned, the maintenance crew does check it occasionally but they didn't give me a hassle, they just warned me to be careful and that the neighbors may call the cops on me. We stayed on the second floor outdoor porch of the northernmost building. It has a great breeze 24/7 which keeps all the bugs away and low visibility from the road so hopefully no one will hassle you. This complex is in very decayed shape and there are lots of ways you could injure yourself if you aren't careful, beware of damaged/rotting stairways, porches and docks. They are all very dangerous. Not a good place for kids. If you do visit, please leave the place in better shape than you found it and be a respectful person to anyone you encounter. No facilites/restrooms/water or electricity, but there is a Circle K within walking distance. A hose bib is available next to a tennis court at a condo complex across the street from the Circle K (near a small maintenance hut), but I'd recommend only using it late at night.

Good luck and have fun.

JIMJimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00707264343205033631noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6944549659371369109.post-46122570483312377112013-10-20T17:45:39.024-07:002013-10-20T17:45:39.024-07:00Believe it or not I lived in the Keys for 15 years...Believe it or not I lived in the Keys for 15 years in a class c van and I always switched spots every couple of nights guess my favorite place was behind the pool room at the shopping center in Key West. Imagine THEIR surprise when I got out of the car to ask them what's going on.

That's when I noticed there were three of them, each with a tool like a large wrench, and me, still groggy. OK. One complimented my car (gee, thanks, guess that's why you were attracted to it in the first place, huh?). One asked me why I was sleeping in my car (I lied, said the wife kicked me out for the night - sort of letting them know I live there so ... I don't know what advantage that was supposed to confer).

I could see one of my fog lights dangling and, either stupidly or bravely asked if I could borrow a wrench as, "One of my fog lights seems to have come loose."
